Avid amateur astronomer for a decade or so. Outreach is my favorite part of astronomy. Really. Can you imagine Evangelism as your favorite part of church? I can't.
The sky was mostly cloudy - just two stars were visible. Oh. That's Vega. The other one is Arcturus, i said. I must be an experienced amateur. But it wasn't long ago that i couldn't imagine being able to do this.
Yes.
Outreach. Oh, and observing. Oh, and the social aspects of the hobby. And, uhm, buying new toys is always fun. Tinkering together new stuff is fascinating. And, hey, it's the Universe. I live there.
"On a clear disk, one can seek forever."
Twice a month, the Warren club hosts a talk. If you didn't like this one, in two weeks there's another from a completely different corner of the Universe.

"Brother Guy (Vatican astronomer) gave a talk at the Detroit Science Center planetarium this past fall. He agrees with you. Extra terrestrial intelligence is not at odds with RC doctrine. We don't talk religion much at the WAS. As the skies clear, we ought to be able to help you find other stuff in the sky. Currently, Mars, Saturn and Venus are evening objects. Venus just after sunset a hand above where the Sun set."

"Want to buy equipment? The right steps are 1. go to the Open House and check out what other can see in a variety of scopes. Ask for an intro on how to use scopes. 2. Join the club and borrow each scope in succession. 3. The 3 P's: Price, Portability, Performance. Given what you can afford and manage, optimize performance for what you want to see. This process took me 5 years, but it could be shortened. My point here is that you don't have to be in a hurry."
"The Ford club's Astronomy For Everyone TV crew will be out with a camera. Hopefully, we'll do some interviews."
