Wolcott Mill Metropark is hosting a special International Year of Astronomy event, part of the Hundred Hours of Astronomy project, focused on our local star and also on Galileo Galilei, the man whose first telescope observations the IYA2009 commemorates. The event will run from 1-5 PM.

WAS members with solar telescopes will be on hand to safely show the Sun in normal telescopes with white light solar filters and ]in special Hydrogen Alpha-filtered telescopes. There will be posters and astronomy information, some great videos (about the upcoming solar maximum and perhaps about the Japanese moon orbiter - with brand new HD video of the lunar surface!), and crafts and talks for kids.

The Society's resident Galileo expert, Ken Bertin, will be giving a presentation on Galileo's life and accomplishments in the historic grist mill building as well. I will update with the time for that when we know it.

Some of this program will be repeated during the open house that evening, in the educational center near Stargate. If you haven't seen the sun with your own eyes (safely! safely!), I highly recommend this.

Weather was perfect, everything came off without a hitch. attendance at Metro Beach (300) and Rotary Park (100+) night time events was good but the day time solar event at Wolcott had lower attendance. Lots of kids from schools and scouts at Rotary Park event. Teachers were giving out extra credit points for attending. Talks I attended were good...Larry Phipps multi-media presentation was VERY professional. Bob Bert

Observing the sun through a hydrogen-alpha telescope is always a great experience - the very interesting solar prominence was just icing on the cake. Ken Bertin's talk on Galileo was interesting and appropriate for the International Year of Astronomy, and Larry Phipps's video presentation was very nice. Lots of interesting stuff going on.
