The Warren Astronomical Society meets monthly on the first Monday of every month in the auditorium at Cranbrook Institute of Science. We do a bit of club business early on, then have a major presentation usually put together by one of our members.

This month, Ken Bertin will be presenting "George Ellery Hale," an overview of the successful yet tragic life and career of the man responsible for the greatest observatories and telescopes of his time. This presentation is suitable for astronomy aficionados of any level, especially those with an interest in the history of astronomy.

Ken's biography of Hale was certainly comprehensive and detailed. In addition to spearheading and fundraising for the construction of a series of five largest telescopes in the world, Hale was a first rate astronomer in his own right, advancing solar physics. This including the invention and building of a number of instruments for the task. Totally amazing and inspirational. Ken also managed to inject considerable humor into the presentation.

    •  Ken's talk was an encyclopedic look at one of the most interesting astronomers of the 19th and 20th centuries, a man who single-handedly charmed and persuaded the richest men of his time into financing a scientific revolution as major as the computer age. The presentation was considerably longer than any other I've seen at the WAS. Trimming it would have been hard, but perhaps it could have been split in two. Still, my interest was held at all times.
