The Warren Astronomical Society meets monthly on the first Monday of every month in the auditorium at Cranbrook Institute of Science. We do a bit of club business early on, then have a major presentation usually put together by one of our members.

Jim Shedlowsky, former WAS treasurer and rockabilly legend, will be presenting a history of the Hubble Space Telescope's development, deployment, and correction. The Hubble wasn't a perfect success from the beginning, but overcame miscalculations and many problems to become one of the most successful scientific ventures in human history.

Jim worked for 36 years at General Motors as a Vehicle Development Engineer/Manager specializing in Acoustics, Noise, and Vibration. He graduated from U of M in 1960 with a degree in Engineering Physics and spent 2 years as an officer in the US army in Germany. In his spare time he recorded music for Epic and Roulette Records as a member of the "Skee Brothers" band. His musical skills are still sharp - as you may see!

    •  Very informative and well presented. Good instrumentals. Too bad I missed the after dinner festivities but I was too tired.
    •  Jim's talk was mostly about the Hubble Space Telescope from inception to just about when the first servicing mission fixed it. One of the great comparison shots showed the same object as 1) a ground based image, 2) the HST before corrective optics, and 3) HST with corrective optics.
    •  Bob acknowledged the passing of long-time WAS member and former president Blaine McCullough - and announced the new service award being named for him. The many volunteers at the Stargate reroofing over the weekend were recognized and applauded. Long-time member Brian Klaus, who'd gone through a major medical crisis, returned for the first time in almost a year - looking great! Jim Shedlowsky gave a great talk on all of the struggles and problems of the Hubble program, and concluded with a fun little musical tribute to that arduous journey. Finally, we got to see an awesome flyover by the ISS after the meeting concluded. All in all, a great night.
