DESCRIPTION:Warren Astronomical Society\n\nThe Warren Astronomical Society 
 meets monthly on the first Monday of every month in the auditorium at Cranb
 rook Institute of Science.  We do a bit of club business early on\, then ha
 ve a major presentation usually put together by one of our members.\n\n"Fas
 t" Mike Simonsen\, long-time WAS member and Development Director of the Ame
 rican Association of Variable Star Observers\, will be presenting on the co
 ntributions amateur astronomers have made and continue to make to real cutt
 ing-edge science. \n\nThe AAVSO was founded in 1911 as an organization of a
 mateur astronomers\, to observe from locations throughout North America var
 iable stars to which the professionals could not allocate scarce and expens
 ive resources.  It was perhaps the prototype of distributed citizen science
  such as today's Folding@Home or Galaxy Zoo.\n\nMike blogs frequently at Si
 mostronomy and contributes to the AAVSO podcast.  His presentations are uni
